Juan Carlos Valdivia

La Paz, Bolivia
Recent work: Jonás y la ballena rosada (1995), American Visa (2005)

After the success of his film American Visa –Goya-nominated and an award winner at the Huelva Festival and the Ariel Awards in Mexico– and after his drama El Último Evangelio, this year Bolivian filmmaker Juan Carlos Valdivia was the recipient of two Sundance Film Festival awards in the World Cinema category: best director and best screenplay. Set in the “Southern District” –the neighborhood in which the richest families of La Paz live– the movie shows the complex relationship between a divorced woman living in an enormous home with her three children, and her Aymaran servants. While reflecting the great social and political changes Bolivia has undergone in the last years, Zona Sur also portrays the misunderstandings that may occur when two extremely different classes live under the same roof, especially if they live ruled by strong codes and structures, and treatment that is similar to that of feudal times.

Carmen Guarini

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Recent work: Jaime de Nevares: Ultimo viaje (1995), Tinta roja (1998), H.I.J.O.S.: El alma en dos (2002), Meykinof (2005)

This new documentary of the filmmaker and anthropologist, Carmen Guarini, debuting in the Argentine Competition at Bafici, explores the works of the Argentinean painter, Carlos Gorriarena. This takes place when they both will be forever estranged from one another after the death of the artist, at the age of 81, in 2007, and he will no longer be around to explain, replace or modify it. And this all becomes very relevant, since though he is one of the most important painters of modern times in his country, not many were able to have contact with his works when he was still alive. Gorriarena, who passed away in the middle of this documentary project, was a bohemian Peronist, an anti-establishment character, sarcastic and provocative, who always shied away from being labeled as a political painter. All this said, Guarini’s work is a unique opportunity to learn about this artist and his legacy, as well as the mark that he made on those who had the chance to be within his circle.

- Vicente

Vicente is a 17-year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome (a neurologic condition that is like a mild form of autism). His brother, this short documentary’s director, tries to show us the Vicente that usually isn’t seen, through their everyday family life and his passion for videogames.

Lionel Baier

Lausanne, Suiza, 1975
Recent Work: Este es su primer largometraje.

Lionel Baier not only wrote and directed this enjoyable film, he also acted in it, portraying… Lionel, a young critic that works on the radio and has a happy relationship with Serge, until he happens to find out that his family could be from Poland; from that moment on, along with his sister, Lucie -portrayed by Natacha Koutchournov, the filmmaker’s fetish actress- they start traveling towards Eastern Europe, searching for their roots and the proof that confirms their Polish origin. The group of situations and characters that they will find along the way in Varsovia includes traveling in a stolen car, with fake passports and real problems; also a fictitious marriage, a car chase in Slovenia and a Cracovian student. Thanks to the eccentric, fun and always surprising adventure of the two siblings, Baier received his first nomination for best fiction film in the Swiss Film Prize.

Lionel Baier

Lausanne, Suiza, 1975
Trabajos anteriores: Este es su primer largometraje.

After venturing into short films, Lionel Baier shot this first work starring Pierre Chatagny, a first timer in front of cameras who ended up providing his character, Loïc, with some of his own experience. Loïc is a young man who leads a double life: in the daytime he works in a chocolate factory, and in the nighttime he searches the web for sexual encounters with older men. Among so many superficial, anonymous and senseless relationships, he finally meets someone who seems to take interest in him as a person and not only because of his body. In this process toward self-knowledge, a series of events take place, such as his best friend’s suicide, his infatuation with a local soccer star, or a car crash that leaves him in a hospital and forces him to have an uncomfortable reunion with his parents. Even though he leads an empty and absurd life, Loïc believes that he will one day do something; something important, new and meaningful.

Howl

This fictional film shows the trial that took place in 1957 and accused Allen Ginsberg’s poem Howl – considered one of the icons of the ‘Beat Generation’- of obscenity. The movie deals with subject matters that are still relevant today, such as the definition of obscenity and the limits of free speech.

Carancho

Sosa is the “carancho”, an attorney who, just like the bird of prey, lives at the expense of the victims of car accidents. Luján is a young doctor who works in a hospital. Between them a love-hate relationship will arise, one which will be decisive for both.

We wish to inform you that we didn’t know

Film made in response for the criminal indifference of international community among the genocide committed in Rwanda that cost about a million lives. Using and extraordinary documentary material and an astonishing visual poetry, the artist express a continuing indignation for the brutal genocide that could have been avoided.

Oriol Canals

Barcelona, España
Recent work: Este es su primer largometraje.

Every year, during springtime, thousands of African immigrants enter Spain illegally through its coasts. But after surviving a hard sea voyage, they will have to face the new complexities that will arise on European ground, living in what can only be described as a mix of fear, uncertainty and anonymity. This documentary -Oriol Canals’ first work- was shown last year at the event organized by ACID (the Agency for Independent Cinema and its Distribution) which is shown parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. The filmmaker achieves the difficult task of getting these people -who live in clandestinely- to express themselves freely and sincerely, avoiding stereotypes and shedding some light over their grief and anguish.

Iranian Cookbook

This documentary shows us a view of the varied gastronomy of Iran, registering the preparation of a diversity of dishes. But the movie does not only deal with this: the everyday conversations that arise spontaneously allow us an insight into the rich panorama of social conflicts in this country.

Dima El-Horr

Beirut, Líbano
Recent work: Este es su primer largometraje.

Shown at festivals such as Toronto, Rome and Rotterdam, this debut of young director Dima El-Horr takes place in Lebanon, on the day that the country traditionally celebrates its independence. Three women that have never seen each other before share a bus ride from Beirut to a prison located in a far-away area, where they will visit their imprisoned men. On the way, going through an arid landscape and after a series of incidents and unexpected situations, the trip will slowly transform into the quest for these three women’s own independence. Mixing absurdity with actual politics, the filmmaker is revealed as a new, powerful, and critical voice within the Middle Eastern film panorama. Also, one of the stars in the film is Hiam Abbas, an actress that was a revelation in titles such as The Syrian bride and Paradise now, and has worked with directors such as Gitai, Spielberg, Becker, McCarthy and Jarmusch, among others.

The Other City

This documentary is about people who are infected with the AIDS virus. They are homeless and are not covered by any form of health insurance. But in spite of the fact that they live in Washington, the capital of the United States of America, and that the percentage of affected people competes with those of several African countries, it seems to be that nobody really cares.

Redención

Carlos goes into a soon-to-close small-town bar. At first, the bartender refuses to sell him a drink, but he finally accepts when Carlos starts talking to him. They sit and Carlos starts to tell his parents’ story with a distinct sadness. This story starts to sound familiar to the bartender.

Recuperación

After a failed police operation, a wounded Abel recovers at an institutional hospital. His monotonous rehabilitation is helped by a series of letters from an unknown character who slowly involves Abel and his surroundings in a new recovery process: one powered by affection.

Persona Muy Importante

After the emotional and economic neglect from her father, Leticia secretly works as a prostitute to make ends meet and be able to pay for her college. Rodrigo, her boyfriend, discovers her with one of her regular clients, and decides to spend one last night with her, revealing her secret and having her face Alfredo, the missing father.

Perdido

In a living room filled with people, Enrique, aged 48, partakes in his daughter’s birthday party. While her family and friends talk cheerfully, the man, absorbed in his thoughts, barely celebrates; he remembers how just a few days earlier he received an unexpected visit, and in his mind he goes over the things that happened during this encounter.

Pendeja

In the middle of the city, a girl wishes to go back to the country with her sick grandfather; but her childish illusions clash against her difficult everyday life, when the aunt she lives with involves her in her small scale drug trafficking business. Unexpected help might be the only way for her to escape and return home…
